How much energy
could current forestry operations contribute to 'green' energy
production in Peeblesshire?
Timber trees growing
in Tweeddale add 7.5 (dry) tonnes of wood per
hectare each year. One
third of this (mostly small trees, branches and tops) are not
used for timber. This amounts to 2.5 dry tonnes per hectare per year.
There are 20,000 hectares of
timber in Tweeddale. This area
probably yields 50,000 air dry tonnes that might realistically be
available
for energy.
Enough for the energy needs of
5,000 people.
