Examples
of this type of large scale generation are as follows:
•Wind Farms ( For UK wind Farms click here) such
as that at
Bowbeat (Installed capacity -1.2
watts for every square metre of land used for the wind farm, but of
course, most of the land under a wind farm could be used for other
purposes, for example bt grazing animals). Wind farms do not
generate electricity all the time and therefore systems of energy
storage need to be developed. Some
of the possible candidates can be found by clicking here.
•Tidal system such as the proposed Severn barrage. For details of location and probable
output click here.
•Wave power e.g. the pelamise machine and Stephen Salter’s
Nodding Ducks
•Geothermal power (Not yet available in the UK)
•Hydro power -Scottish Hydro Board (Installed
capacity - 0.1watts per square metre of land flooded).
•Biomass such as the wood burning power station recently built in
Lockerbie.(Installed capacity -1.2 watts for every square metre
used for biofuel). Miscanthus,
sometimes incorrectly called elephant grass, can also be used (Photo of Miscanthus).
•Solar -Photovoltaic cells in desert areas. (Installed
capacity - six to seven watts per square metre of
land covered).
