The amount of fuel
needed to produce nuclear
power.
A nuclear power
station will probably have an installed capacity of 1,000MW. To
produce its design output it will consume 24 tonnes of fuel containing
5% Uranium 235. This quantity of fuel will have been derived from
200 tonnes of natural uranium. This in turn will have been produced
from 25,000 to 100,000 tonnes of uranium ore.
A coal fired
power station with a similar installed capacity will require 3.2
million tonnes of coal each year.
