How much energy
could be produced by tidal power in the UK?
The Tidal power resources
of the United Kingdom could produce about 50 TWh a year of
which the Severn
barrage would produce 17 TWh each
year enough for 450,000 people and one on the Solway 10 TWh enough for
250,000 people.
By comparison a
nuclear power station (Torness)
produces about 12 TWh, the same amount of energy that would
be produced by a 1200 wind turbines. Enough energy for 320,000 people.

Algae
to grow biofuel
Texas based
PetroSun is producing 30 tonnes of diesel plus 110 tonnes of other
biomass per hectare per year at a photosynthetic efficiency of 4.7%
which is probably 10 times more efficient than diesel produced from
grain crops.
Uptake
of Carbon Dioxide by the Oceans
It has been
estimated that since 1800 118 billion tonnes of carbon released into
the atmosphere have been taken up by the oceans. This amounts to one
third of the carbon dioxide produced by mankind during this time. The
most important organisms removing carbon dioxide are the coccolithophores. These organisms
were very active in the past when the chalk and limestone
deposits were produced some 55 million years ago (Palaeocene-Eocene
Termal Maximum) .
